Referral spam

Posted Jan 24, 2004 in Spam.

For the first time, I am getting referral spam. I have received several visits from the StarProse Referrer Advertising System 2004, and these are appearing on my referrals page. So far, I've had fake referrals from the RIAA and the campaign to elect Joe Lieberman, and I'm sure more will follow.

Is this doing me much harm? Not really. The referrals page only shows the last 50 entries, so they don't appear for very long. I'm not a friend of the RIAA or Joe Lieberman, but I don't think I feel strongly enough about it to try and ban the system giving me the fake referrals.

I have decided to wait for a while, and see how many of these things show up. If it gets to be too often, I'll have to consider filtering referrals for the first time. Sigh.

It's happening to me too: about 2.000 fake referrals every second day. It's going to be the last trend after comment spam.
If you find a good filter, please share it with you readers.

If I find one, I'll definitely post about it. It isn't too much of a problem for me at the moment, but it is only a matter of time...

Might be a good idea to prevent the referrals from being PageRanked (is that a verb?). At least then you ain't helping the spammers get a higher PageRank.

Ironically, when I created my my referrals page, I intended it as a way to give legitimate referrals some sort of "reward" for linking it me in the first place. But I know Simon Willison is preventing PageRankery (another new word!) on his blog, and I may have to consider it in the future if I cannot find (or figure out) some way of filtering them.

Nothing is sacred anymore, is it?
