BBC favicon

Posted May 28, 2004 in Design.

BBC News Online finally has a favicon. I think that these little icons have become important branding tools, so I've long wondered why the brand-conscious Beeb has been slow on the uptake.

Grey icon with a white letter 'I'

Not exactly a design masterpiece, is it?

    Absolutely. The beeb can't help but stay in the good ol' 60s. But those little icons are MAD. Favicons... can't say i've ever heard of it before.

    John, a "favicon" is the icon captured by a web browser and placed into the address bar before the address (among other places). Gecko-based browsers appear to automatically search for "favicon.ico" in the root of a site, but other browsers often need prompting:

    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

    They seem to have lost the icon now. Oh well.
