New hosting in the works

Posted Jun 01, 2004 in Technology.

Frustration with my current web host has forced me to look elsewhere. I have just purchased two years of hosting with DreamHost, who are currently offering a great package for $15.95 per month. For the moment, however, I will leave the nameservers pointing to my current host.

I will make the change to the new host at the same time as rolling out the new si-blog, which is still in the planning stage. I am going to have a completely different database structure, so a direct transfer of the existing data isn't going to work. At some point, I will need to carefully export the existing data and incorporate it into the new format.

    Make sure you have at least three data fields in your DB structure. CREATED (draft or published), ISSUED (published) and MODIFIED (modified).

    Quite right, Anne. I only really need two fields for that information, actually. There will be no "draft" entries on the si-blog.

    I think you want all three, (1) for forward compatibility and (2) for Atom.

    Atom only requires <issued> and <modified> for entries, I believe. For example, here is the Atom that relates to this entry:

    <entry>
    <title>New hosting in the works</title>
    <link rel="alternate" type="application/xhtml+xml" href="http://jessey.net/blog/archive/entries/?id=140"/>
    <id>http://jessey.net/blog/archive/entries/index.php?id=140</id>
    <issued>200406-01T10:31:17-05:00</issued>
    <modified>200406-01T11:42:54-05:00</modified>
    <summary type="text/plain">I have purchased two years of hosting with Dreamhost.</summary>
    </entry>
