Arrival at Saturn

Posted Jul 01, 2004 in Science.

The Cassini-Huygens probe has successfully entered orbit around the planet Saturn, starting a 4-year observation period. A nail-biting 95 minute burn from the main engine was sufficient to slow the probe down for a near-perfect orbital insertion. A small correction burn may be necessary to increase the orbital period slightly, but that would carry none of the drama of the main burn.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative venture of NASA, the Esa, and the Italian Space Agency (Asi). As a native of the United Kingdom, I am proud of the British involvement in the project, as well as the good work being done by NASA.
