From Midshipman to Rear Admiral

Posted Aug 03, 2004 in Books.

I have just finished reading the Hornblower Saga. Instead of reading them in the order in which they were published, I read them in chronological order, starting with Mr. Midshipman Hornblower and ending with Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies.

To anyone even vaguely interested in maritime history, I recommend them wholeheartedly. C.S. Forester demonstrates his extraordinary understanding of naval life and tactics, describing engagements in delicious detail. He weaves the naval events of the early 19th Century into the life of Horatio Hornblower - a self-conscious officer with an analytical mind and unfailing heroism. Fans of Jack Aubrey (or even Jack Sparrow!) will find themselves quite at home with the honorable Hornblower.
