South by Southwest Interactive

Posted Aug 21, 2004 in Events.

I'm hoping to be at SXSW in March 2005. I'm really only interested in SXSW Interactive, but I might get the combo package that allows me to attend SXSW Film as well. I'd appreciate some advice on car rentals (is a car needed?) and places to stay. Who else is planning to go?

Anywhere in downtown Austin is accessible by cab or walking so I don't think a car is needed. I've stayed at the La Quinta Downtown which is near the capitol building and not too far from the convention center.

That's good to know. I didn't relish having to pay for a rental car. Anyone else planning to be there?

Don't rent a car. Nearly everything related to the conference is either within walking distance, or someone will be willing to share a cab. You'll pay extra for parking at most hotels, and you probably won't ever use the car outside of getting to and from the airport.

La Quinta is the cheapest place that is close, but if you can afford the extra $20/night I recommend the Hampton Inn & Suites instead. It's about the same distance as La Quinta from 6th Street, but it's much closer to the convention centre, the free breakfast is better, it's much newer, and I've never seen any giant bugs crawling around at the Hampton. (I leave you to figure out why I brought that up.)

I haven't decided whether I'm going or not either. Guess I should decide today if I want to make that cheap rate...

I decided NOT to go, Shannon. I can't afford it at the moment :(
