New Dawn or Phantom Fury?

Posted Nov 09, 2004 in War.

The Iraqi government are wisely calling the action in Falluja Al Fajr, or “Operation New Dawn” in English. The US military have chosen to call the operation Phantom Fury, which sounds more like a video game or a bad movie starring Dean Cain.

I recognize the importance of going in to Falluja and dealing with the insurgents, but is it necessary to give the operation such a ridiculous title? At best it is just dumb-sounding, but at worst it could be considered inflammatory. Must we always have this “yeehaa” attitude?

I think that codenames in general are weird...

Operation Sea Lion - Hitler's planned invasion of Britain
Operation Overlord - Allied invasion of mainland Europe
Operation Market Garden - Allied operation to capture bridges along the Waal and Rhine
Operation Irene - U.S. operation to capture Farrah Aidid in Somalia

I think the name for the operation could have been just "Fury"... I think that is more representative of what they are trying to do.

The code names you mentioned earlier, particularly those from World War Two, are exactly that - code names. They are used when referring to secret plans, so that the enemy doesn't get a whiff of what is going on. But "Operation Desert Storm", "Operation Phantom Fury", etc. are media-friendly names that probably sound cool to those gun-toting warmonger types.

Ahh, I see what you are saying...

I guess it started with Operation Rolling Thunder and Operation Rolling Thunder II. Had to make them sound cool for the media so that didn't know they were leveling rice paddies. ;-)

LOL. We might as well be calling it "Operation Kick Some Insurgent Ass" or "Operation Doesn't Live Fire Look Good Through Night Vision Goggles?"

You are forgetting the mother of all media friedly military actions,"Operation Infinite Justice".

I still think nothing can be as media-friendly and as stupid as "Operation: Iraqi Freedom".
