Going deep

Posted Apr 22, 2005 in Events.

A Ukranian team of cavers have managed to go 2,080 meters (6,822 feet) into the Earth. At that depth, the nine explorers found a sandy chamber beneath Krubera in the breakaway region of Abkhazia, Georgia. Since the mean (quadratic) radius of the Earth is 6,373 kilometers, the cavers have some way to go before they match the efforts of Saknussemm and the Lidenbrocks.
