One to beam up, laddie

Jimmy Doohan, who played chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott of Star Trek's Enterprise, has died at the age of 85, following a “wee bout” of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease.

Doohan was famous for playing the Scottish engineer of the Enterprise, but his real talent was for all kinds of foreign and bizarre dialects and accents, including the original genesis of the Klingon language.

Jimmy was married three times, and fathered a total of nine children (the last of which, incredibly, was at the ripe old age of 80). He died at his home in Redmond (Washington) at 5:30 this morning. He will be sadly missed.
