Quick plug-in 9

Posted Oct 26, 2005 in Databases, PHP, Technology.

I just spent about half an hour installing MySQL 5 and PHP 5 on IIS so I could do some class-related testing. Didn't it used to be much easier? I could've sworn it was just next, next, finish, but now I have to edit .ini files and create environment variables and stuff. What's up with that?

PHP I installed here on IIS in a snap, but I gave up on installing MySQL. So for now I continue on in ASP/VB/SQL at work and PHP/MySQL at home.

The "Windows Essentials" edition of MySQL seems to install without difficulty. The complicated bit is (a) configuring PHP to recognize MySQL, and (b) configuring IIS to recognize them (i.e. setting paths and environment variables). I have compiled a set of convenient instructions that I can email you, if you like.
