Influenza

Posted Feb 08, 2006 in Events, Family, Health.

I was one of the first in my family to get vaccinated for influenza. Being a fat bugger, I claimed that I qualified as an at risk patient. My wife and stepchildren got their vaccines soon after.

Several months later, my stepdaughter is recovering from it. She passed it on to my wife, who is suffering very badly, and now I have it too. It is possible that my stepson suffered from a mild version of it last week. I guess the WHO got it wrong this time around. Do I qualify for a refund, do you suppose?

Anyway, this is particularly inconvenient for me. I am supposed to be teaching tomorrow, and I'm not sure how I'm going to fare in a five-hour class. On Friday, I'm supposed to drive to Newark to pick up my brother. He's spending a few days with us before flying back to England. So the timing is awful.

The biggest problem with the Flu shot, besides giving you the Flu, is that it only protects you from the old Flus, not the new Flus.

I know 1 person who has died from the shot and 1 person who has to learn how to walk and talk again after almost dieing, so I'll never get it.

Well, I still think the shot is the way to go; however, this time it hasn't helped me at all. I'm now in a pretty bad state :(

I just recieved your email. Knock on wood (3x) I have never gotten the flu - or atleast I never remember getting it.

I don't think I would ever pay for a flu shot; A) I'm a poor student. B) If I get sick - I get sick. I always try to eat a bit healthier (fruits and veggies -- less fast food) during fall and winter so my immune system is a bit better than usual. Also, there are older people that need the shot more than me.

That's crazy Stephen. I have never heard about cases like that (add's another reason not to get the flu shot).

    Hope you get well.
