England out

Posted Jul 01, 2006 in England, Events, Sport.

England have been knocked out of the World Cup by Portugal, after another heartbreaking penalty shootout. Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute, England looked the better side for most of the game. The addition of Aaron Lennon injected much-needed pace, and England had many chances to win.

If England are going to do better in these competitions, they are going to have to learn how to score goals. They simply don't seem to be able to get the ball in the back of the net. Perhaps it is the formation they have been playing, or perhaps it is the recent emphasis on slowing down the game (which seems to me to be contrary with the English way of playing the game). Either way, it will be done under new leadership.

I will admit I was surprised to see England and Brazil knocked out. However, I was very pleased to see that. Sorry man! It meant that Italy wouldn't have to play either of them. Italy has now moved on to the Final! I am so excited!! That was one hell of a game today too. Not to mention one hell of a goal. I just had a feeling that the Italian defense would step up as they have done the entire World Cup. No goals have been actually scored on them by a player from another team. The only goal against them came when they faced the US and put it in themselves. So...I hope the defense continues its dominance and beats whoever their opponent is on Sunday. Italia!!!
