England have been knocked out of the World Cup by Portugal, after another heartbreaking penalty shootout. Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 65th minute, England looked the better side for most of the game. The addition of Aaron Lennon injected much-needed pace, and England had many chances to win.
If England are going to do better in these competitions, they are going to have to learn how to score goals. They simply don't seem to be able to get the ball in the back of the net. Perhaps it is the formation they have been playing, or perhaps it is the recent emphasis on slowing down the game (which seems to me to be contrary with the English way of playing the game). Either way, it will be done under new leadership.
