Certified certificate? Certainly!

I needed to get a copy of my marriage certificate today so that my wife could get the name changed on her passport. I wandered into the local Register of Wills office where they deal with such matters and asked how one would go about it. I was given a form to fill in. The requested fields (apologies for the geek-speak) were my name, my wife's maiden name, my address and my home telephone number. I gave the clerk $20 and she prepared my certificate. When she had finished, she gave it to me, telling me the receipt was in the same envelope. That was it. What surprised me was that I had not been asked to show any form of identification at all. Armed with very little personal information, I could have walked in there and asked for a copy of anyone's certificate and then used that for various nefarious purposes. I can't say I was all that impressed.
