How school is going?
I am fast approaching the mid-point of my first term at Allentown Business School, where I am doing an Associate Degree in Web Administration. Mid-term tests are coming up next week. I am currently doing five subjects:
- Design Elements - Although not directly connected with the web field, I am learning a bit about presentation, use of color and layout techniques.
- i-Net+ - This teaches me about the various technologies behind the Internet, and networking in general. In each lecture, I am learning about many aspects of these technologies. This knowledge is already proving useful, and I find the class challenging and exciting.
- English I - This is helping me to adjust to the differences in language between the English spoken in England and the English spoken in the United States. I am picking up a few tips on the best way to communicate with clients.
- Introduction to Computer Concepts - This course is a very basic introduction to computers. It is of little use to me at the moment, but hopefully I'll get a few pointers on Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Powerpoint, since I don't have any experience with these applications.
- Basic Web Authoring - In this class, I am doing HTML 4.0. I am already very familiar with XHTML and CSS, so at first I thought I'd be learning nothing new. However, it turns out that I am learning all the elements of markup that have been deprecated. This may seem like a bad thing, but actually it is making it easier for me to analyze code written by other people.
On the whole, I think I am doing quite well. I estimate that I am currently maintaining an average across the five classes of about 80%, with Design Elements dragging that percentage down from around 90%. I imagine that the next term will be quite a bit more difficult, but I am relishing the opportunity to get stuck in. I am also pleased to report that I have made several friends in the short time I have attended the school.
