Turkey Bake (Pasta-Free Lasagne)

  • 2 pounds of 99% fat free ground turkey
  • 1 pound of sliced roasted turkey
  • 1 jar of pasta sauce
  • 1 pound of grated cheese
  • Any seasonings you may like

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large skillet, brown the ground turkey on a medium heat. Add the jar of pasta sauce (we prefer this Wegmans Sauce and stir in to the beef. At this point, you may wish to add additional seasoning. We like to add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper and a little Herbs de Provence. After about 5 minutes of stirring, remove from the heat.

Put a thin layer of the mixture on the bottom of a large casserole dish. Add a layer of the sliced roasted turkey (chicken also works). Sprinkle about a quarter of the grated cheese (we prefer a mix of mozzarella and medium cheddar). Add a more generous layer of the meat mixture, then another layer of turkey, then the cheese. Repeat the three layers again. Layer on the rest of the meat sauce and top with rest of the grated cheese.

Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Take it out of the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. Serves 4-6 people.

Additional Information

You can also make this with ground beef instead of turkey, which will make it taste a little more like lasagne. The calorie count will be higher due to the higher fat content of the beef.

Using fat-free cheddar and mozzarella will lower the fat content considerably, although it should not be used for the top layer of cheese.
